On February 2, 2017, a major fire overtook the plant, burning three stories of trash uncontrolled for two weeks, without any evacuation of the adjacent Lorton Valley neighborhood. The incinerator was closed for the rest of 2017 as costly repairs were underway.
The incinerator sends their ash to the adjacent
I-95 Landfill, which now primarily accepts just incinerator ash.
