Duke proposed two 800MW units, but only one was approved. They'll also be closing 4 older units. The proposed expansion has been met with organized resistance. The expansion project has a pricetag of 1.8 billion. Duke has been issued an air permit and has begun construction, though it is' being appealed through a state agency'.
On 12/3/2008 12/3 an Asheville judge revoked Cliffside's air quality permit because it didn't meet Maximum Available Control Technology (MACT) regulations for mercury. This is NOT a carbon capture and sequestration plant.
As of Jan 2010, this is still an active proposal.
In April 2009 No Coal activists came together to oppose the proposed plant. Approximately 300 people protested, 44 people risked arrest.
