"At one time, when Enderlin focused solely on sunflower seed processing, the plant produced more than enough power to be entirely self-sustaining, with spare energy to sell back to the electric grid. As operations grew to encompass canola seeds, which do not produce usable biomass, the plant had to begin paying a power bill again. … Along with sunflower seed hulls, the power plant also burns other forms of renewable fuels, including seed screenings and damaged seed or grain. Working closely with the state’s Environmental Protection Agency, the Enderlin facility has also begun burning railroad ties and industrial wood that would otherwise be incinerated or take up limited landfill space."
