Notes
In late December 2008, this was the site of an enormous coal ash spill. The spill got tremendous coverage (too many links to list). The spill was many times larger than the famous Exxon Valdez spill. Following the spill TVA informed local residents that drinking the water was not harmful (to boil it first). In the days and weeks following, many locals have become sick. Coal fly ash is known to contain mercury, arsenic, and other heavy metals.
